I would like a clear and consistant answer to a question. Why does the mention of my participation in wheelchair basketball,bring the conversation to an abrupt halt,its happened time and time again however this has allowed me time to construct my own theories...
1.The Zoners are intimidated by the fact that I am participating in something which should be impossible

2.Or you are all genuinely disinterested as you assume the sport is beyond you and this feeling exacerbates your insecurity,feck! I would never assume that about anyone here with the exception of Jamie...smile.
Hmm, not eally, I'm just genuinely disintrested in the sport to be honest. It's cool you play and enjoy it and that's great for you but personally I'm not interested in wheel chairs or basketball per say and certainly not in the combination thereof ( my remarks should certainly not be taken as demeaning to those who have to spend their lives in a wheel chair, lots of great peole, they're dealing with their thigs just like we are). I still hold (at least as of 2001) the European record for the blind in 200m Freestyle (set in Riccione, Italy in September 1997) so I'm not intimidated by any sport really but I can't see how my swimming career (which has ome to an end as of 2000) is of much interest to anyone so I don't bring it up much.
So, good luck with it, but only because other people don't find your choice of hobbies interesting doesn't mean that they feel challenged by them, simply means, well, they don't find them interesting I suppose. Best of luck with it man.

Hmm ok but its seems like something more than disinterest its as if the entire Zone has a problem with this subject,I can understand that to a degree..but after that it becomes suspicious.
Goblin, I think it's just a case of your having some interests that people don't understand, aren't really into, or just have no comment on. There's no organized effort or anti-Goblin club, least as far as I know. I'm used to this myself but I still put the topics out there in case somebody's of a like mind.
I don't know. It's kind of like talking about British sport or politics. Not everybody's going to be interested in that kind of thing and it's not because of lack of intelligence or character or such.

basketball. I don't know the rules, never have known the rules, and will never know the rules because I couldn't care less. It involves a basket and a ball, that's enough for me. Sorry to any of you who play basketball, it's not just you. I feel the same way about football and curling and snowboarding and cricket (is that really a sport?) and pingpong and tenis etc.
I think the problem here is neither the sport, not the degree of interest of the Zoners. I feel the problem here is Goblin and the fact that he expects everyone and everything to revolve around him. Cool if you play basketball dude and cool if you do it sitting in a wheelchair, cool if you are going to drive a formula racing car next and cool if you do it with your hands tied behind your back while steering the wheel with your toes. All is cool for as long as you are the one doing it. Happy now???? huh???

wheelchair basketball? yup, heard of that, pretty violent sport isn't it? it's just like normal basket ball I think, but instead of running with the ball so to speak, they roll with it?
Feild hockey I will pm you..though be warned I'm very enthusisatic about this sport..the adrenalin rush from racing around on 4 wheels and crashing into a wall at speed, is just incredible and unlike climbing there's only a few feet to fall instead of several hundred..grin.

Dobbin the game is incredibly intense and fast most of the players are well over 6ft ,so even sitting down ,they are too big to argue with...and they know it..smile.

Labyrinth I think this is a widespread problem and not just when it comes to sport..I have noticed a real reluctance to share information here,on different countries and their cultures and I have to say this insularity seems to come mostly from the American members,who seem to be seriously disinterested in anything outwith their country..
That kind of blinkered view can only lead to suspicion distrust and it forces the uninititated to assume,that the Scots are all a load of violent drink sodden bampots,or Canadians are permanately frostbitten,or Aussies eat Christmas dinner on the beach with a high of 90 degrees...
Do we have the right to bleat and moan about society's ignorance in dealing with our disabilities,if we act the same way by refusing to educate each other about ourselves....
You just need to lighten up, man. I don't come to the zone for cultural exchange. I come for fun. When I want to learn about another culture I read there government websites, the encyclopedia, CIA world fact book, etc.
I've heard of wheelchair basketball, and I think ti's awesome that people who are wheel-chair ridden and like basketball can play it. But being a blind kid who's not much interested in sports liek basketball and other sightieish type things, I'm not interested in normal basketball. Though this wheelchair basketball does sound interesting.

Well, maybe some people are only concerned with their own culture. Dunno what to say about that. Maybe it's just fear of offending people unlike themselves. People seem to be so afraid of offending others they resort to just keeping any thoughts or questions to themselves, even if it were never to happen. Besides, most of the folks here are in their teens and twenties and I suppose during those times you're still trying to find out who you are, let alone about the rest of the planet. I know I was that way then. As for what we have a right to moan about, you need to get used to hypocrisy and double standards. They're built into human nature. This is not a judgment or criticism, it's just how people are wired. If you continue to believe that people are supposed to be consistent and predictable, you're on the road to misery. Least that's how I see it and of course there's universes of room for me to be wrong.
Caitlin the sport is ideal for people who are paralysed as they only need superior upper body strength...though in saying that, 3 guys in the team are paralysed from the chest down..but you wouldn't know it...

I think the wheelchair basketball is great. As for learning about other cultures, I'd much rather learn from another person than a government website. I'm not much of a sports person but when I first came to the zone, Alex was one of the first people to welcome me. I love other cultures food as I collect recipes and love to cook, Alex sent me some Scottish recipes. We can all learn from each other in many different ways.

Ya i heard that most of the people play it are paralyzed from just waist down, and that their upper body strength is quite amazing for the most part! Like Puggle, basketball isn't my cup of tea, but the thought of wheelchair basketball is nifty enough. And lol Puggle! Kangaroos bouncing down the street? Cute thought ...

No, it's not a matter of being mature, but we really want to know the answer to that question. When u started that thread, u said u knew how to do a better job dealing with certain users, but u never gave us a good solid answer. Childish? Molicious? Hardly. Starting a topic and saying you know how to do something and then avoiding it when your answer comes in to question? Definatly all of the above. And speaking of struggling, it seems as though u were struggling to give an answer, so u felt you could simply avoid the topic. Pretty lame hmmm? I guess it is safe to assume that u really don't have the answer to all the problems u clame to have. Dear Zoners have you ever thought that Goblin like our good ol' friend blindguy just makes people angry so they will give him some time and attention? My suggestion is stop replying to his posts, do not open them, do not read them, ignore him. That is the worst that can happen to him: being ignored! He will rant, and offend, and accuse, and treat everyone like durt for as long as dear Alex can get attention. His Royal assness, his majestic drama Queen, can't live without our attention. That's all! Pity him.

With all due respect, I have to say you are a bit of a hypocrite here since you do what you can to disagree with Goblin and put him down, even more so than any other poster I've seen on his boards. Granted, yes, he's way out of line here and I expected a lot more from him than this (sorry goblin, often I agree with or at least respect your views but putting caitlin down like that and your comment on the admin discussion are way below you and I have to say childish and confrontational and utterly needlessly so, I'm sure you have not programmed and operated a web site and do not realize how tricky and complicated it is, I have and let me tell you, it's no easy task, it would take you years of studying to figure out how the coding works and how to address the myriad of problems that confront you even if you do not have to deal with malicious users). That being said, Star, you are seeking Goblin's attention very obviously with your posts and you are trying to provoke himneedlessly and I can't see how that puts you all that far above his status, except you single him out more so than others, disagree materially with someone, it's good, putting people down, evenif they do deserve it .. shows you are not all that much better, with full respect indeed.

Oh yeah Goblin, I am sure you will win the Nobel Prize for bringing peace to the Zone! Gee, wildbrew I am sorry, but I can see through Goblin's little hypocrises and he doesn't fool me. He obviously have fooled you. But that is OK, Goblin has fooled many others before you so I don't really blame you for falling into the trap of his fake kindness and big-heartness! Do you know the myth of Paris and the Golden Apple? Paris had a Golden Apple and wrote on it "for the most beautifull woman" and threw it amist 3 goddesses: Artemis (Diana), Hera and Aphrodite (Venus). Immidiatelly the 3 goddesses began fighting amongst them which of them was the most beautiful and deserved the Apple. While all this was going on Paris just sat aside amused by the sight of the 3 arguing goddesses. In many ways Goblin plays the same game. He throws a Golden Apple with some offense and then stand aside as the Zoners argue amongst them. The funniest part is that he then acts like the victim when someone like me sees through his actions and accuses him openly and I quote his words: and as for the spitting cobra I skip her rants she has no effect on me whatsoever. Wow, ms star is so clever ain't she. Well, you did not address the point I originally made and your post reinforces that point in fact, goblin is obviously not the only Zone's trouble maker and you are using the boards for some type of personal vadetta against him which, really, is quite sad, disagree with the material facts of what someone says and stop attacking them personally, feel free to do so privately but the rest of us don't really care what history you guys may have. I decide on my actions based on my own judgements and you've done little to convince me I should prefer yours in this matter.
